What happens during the first session?

The initial visit is an assessment.  First, we will take care of necessary paperwork and discuss my practice policies.  Next, we will ask you questions and take notes in order to document a clear picture of your background, mental health history, medical history, and the current problem that you are experiencing.  We will go over our assessment with you, and at that time we will discuss if you would like to move forward with treatment.  If you choose to continue treatment, together we will develop a treatment plan.  We will also refer you to other professionals/community agencies if needed. You should feel free to ask us any questions you may have at that time.

How do I know that what I tell you will be kept private?

Ethically and legally we are bound by confidentiality regardless of your age and we take this obligation very seriously.  There are however, exceptions to the confidentiality rule:
1) if you tell us about a plan to hurt yourself or someone else,
2) if you tell us that someone is hurting you (if you’re under 18 or over 62 years old).  In each of these cases we are required by law to report such information to the proper authorities (police, DCFS, etc.).
